Modification of the LULU Operators for Preservation of Critical Image Details

Noise removal is an important aspect of image processing, as the human visual system is very sensitive to the high amplitude of noise signals, thus noise in an image can result in a subjective loss of information. LULU operators are non-linear rank order filters, which efficiently and successfully remove impulse noise. Certain image details, such as thin lines and circles, textures etc. are often misinterpreted as noise and removed, thus essential image information is not available. Therefore, a modification of the LULU operators for the preservation of such details based on a parallel smoothing with two sub operators is presented and evaluated in this paper.
